Who is at risk?

Although the precise causes for colorectal cancer have not been determined, medical professionals have identified certain risk factors.

Some risk factors exist and there is nothing than can be done about them, such as:

• Family history (if close relatives had the disease, risks are higher)
• Ethnic background
• Age (chances of developing the disease increase after the age of 50)

Other potential risk factors can be influenced, such as:

• Personal history of polyps or colorectal cancer (they may re-develop; therefore, more frequent testing is recommended)
• Exercise
• Being overweight (in particular, having fat around the waist)
• Smoking and alcohol
• Diet
