For more cholesterol information: The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) provides guidance and information about a variety of topics related to a person's health. Prevention is emphasized. In November 1985 NHLBI launched the National Cholesterol Education Program to raise awareness and understanding about high blood cholesterol as a risk factor for coronary heart disease through various educational efforts. The following booklets published by the NHLBI are recommended for reading: Lowering a cholesterol level that is too high helps to reduce the risk for heart disease. Find out what your cholesterol numbers mean and what treatments are available. This brochure includes a tool to estimate the risk for having a heart attack, and outlines ways to reduce risk as well as a list of resources for further information.
